OK, according to the 2.0 message, IMing has been around for about 10 years. I know that this is how a lot of people contact each other. I'm afraid that I see it as another way that people stay attached to their equipment requiring immediate attention. I don't leave my cell phone on because I believe that my time is my own and shouldn't be at the beck and call of whoever wants my attention. I was at a dinner party a couple of years ago with a bunch of university students and right in the middle of dinner one of the women got a phone call which she answered and proceeded to converse with the person right at the dinner table! This seemed the outside of enough for me in rudeness, but none of the other diners even batted an eye. I don't know, I think that a person should be able to limit when they are available.
I can appreciate that this would be a useful tool for some, but I believe that I'll stick with email which can be answered at my convenience and not something that I have to keep an eye out for all of the time.
Wow, should I be saying "Bah Humbug" or something.....

I agree completely about being attached to our equipment and at the beck and call of anyone. The only time I find IM really helpful is for real-time help when I'm on a website and have a question (about a product, for instance). I suppose the phone would work fine for this, too, but in my experience the IM gets an immediate response whereras, with the phone, I may have to wait on HOLD until someone can help me.
How completely RUDE of that person who took a phone call during dinner! What are we coming to as a society? If Miss Manners had not already taken that name, I would use it, myself!!
Hey Librarian Selector Girl, I don't even answer my phone at home unless people identify themselves... I don't own a cell phone, but read Miss Manners "rules" and they are very common sense. As a teenager in retail, we were taught "first come, first served", and I still follow that; even tho it has gotten me in trouble with subsequent bosses.
